” I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive. “
Barack Obama has blazed to a South Carolina victory but along with that he picks up a prized endorsement.
The most note worthy and to me the most important endorsement to date comes on the heels of Dr. King’s birthday observance and the haunting memory of his “I Have a Dream” speech.
President John F. Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, has formally endorsed Barack Obama today bringing to bear an even bigger force than Oprah! The memories of the late John and Bobby Kennedy legacy to America.
The fat lady is not singing yet but we are definitely heading into a Super Tuesday primary that is taking on an even more super meaning.
Have we finally arrived at the time Dr. King referred to? The day when we as African Americans will be judged on the content of our character, and not on the color of our skin? God only knows but I sure pray so for us all!
Michigan’s government has come to a grinding stop due to a lack of concern and cooperation between it’s governor and legislative branch to come to an agreement on an operating budget.
State services will be effected as notices went out Friday for employees to stay home until a new budget can be approved and put in place.
Currently it seems that the only employees expected to report to work are prison employees though it is not clear how their pay is to be met.
This budget crisis was nothing new to the governor and our state representatives. That aside be it partisan politics or just plain apathy nothing was done within the required time to avoid the current mess.
Who is to blame this time? The Republicans or the Democrats? Maybe it is us the voters! After all when we voted for our officials we usually have the choice of voting for what is at best the lesser of two evils.
What is without question is that this time evil prevails ….
We have reached epidemic proportions of youth violence. Locally in Kalamazoo we have had three shootings so far this year. Two have been fatal.
Nationally, youths assault each other at an alarming rate. Most recently a gang assault upon a 13 year old white youth that was caught on tape and shown on Fox News.
Police also took into custody an 18 year old Black man wanted in connection with the shootings on the Delaware State Campus in Dover. Loyer D. Braden, arrested about 3 a.m. in his dorm room after a week long investigation and search for the shooting suspect.
The shooting followed an altercation between Braden and one of the victims that took place earlier.
What is the source of the anger and frustration that moves our young people to such extremes? Why is the first choice to settle differences a gun? Why have egos become so fragile that the only way to maintain self respect is through the disrespect of another person’s life?
I was on the bus the other day just after a shooting involving some young men here locally. Fortunately no one was killed but what really confused me was the comments of one of the victims who was just released from the hospital. He had been shot in the leg and gave the impression that his wound was a badge of honor. He stated that he had been shot by his “friend”, one of the shooters who had used him as a shield.
What kind of friend is that?
